Frustrations with Current Search Results
I knew you could upload a book and ask questions about it, but I wanted a more inclusive chat experience. The top search results were chatbots that just used the base model's knowledge.
The major language models are trained on books, and so it often already knows about the contents without having to provide it. The problem is, it is unable to limit the scope to just this book without some clever prompting or agent techniques. In addition, we can't always easily determine if it has ingested the contents of a book. It's far better to simply provide this.
The top search results didn't even use the contents of the book. I found two apps. One was native mobile app, and the other one didn't let you upload the book. I know of existing AI apps that let you do this, so there was something wrong with the quality of the search results.
We've all been there, right? You're just looking for a sliver of information, a tidbit that might just transform your day. You enter your search query, hit enter, and wait for the magic of the Internet to serve up exactly what you need. But instead, what do you get? A list of apps, none of which have any relevance to your search. They don't even use the book's contents or a hint of its essence.
It's like setting off on a journey to find a hidden treasure and ending up with a pocketful of pebbles. It's frustrating, aggravating, and makes you want to bang your keyboard in despair. And the worst part? This isn't a one-off, rare occurrence. No, it happens far too often for comfort. It's like looking for a beautiful day, but the forecast is always gloomy. Just when you think you're about to bask in the golden rays of knowledge, you're rudely greeted by a storm cloud of irrelevance. This is the sad reality of our current search results. They're far from perfect, often leaving us lost in the storm instead of guiding us towards our desired destination.
Consulting the Top LLMs on AI Book Chat
So I asked the top LLMs at the moment at time of this writing. You can read the responses at the bottom of this post.
Before diving into the conversations I had with these unique LLMs, I think it's important to give you a bit of background. LLMs, or Language Learning Models, are sophisticated AI technologies designed to understand, learn, and generate human-like text. They're the unseen forces behind many of the virtual assistants and chatbots we interact with today.
Each LLM has its own specialty, and the ones I chose to consult are some of the best in their respective fields. Some are phenomenal in engaging in casual banter, some excel in providing detailed descriptions, while others are well-versed in answering complex contextual queries.
One of the most fascinating aspects of interacting with LLMs is how each one has a unique voice and persona, much like how every author has their own distinct style. It’s almost like chatting with different people, but these individuals are machines, not humans. Now, let's take a look at these intriguing conversations.
The Evolution of Search Relevance
Gone are the days, where we could just enter keywords into the search box, and expect the most relevant results to be on the first page.
It's fascinating, right? The way our search patterns have evolved over the years is nothing short of revolutionary. We've gone from rudimentary keyword-based searches to complex algorithms that predict and understand our intent. Yet, there's still so much ground to cover. For instance, why should finding those niche apps, like the ones focusing on book chat AI or book discovery AI, feel like hunting for a needle in a haystack?
Why can't they pop up in our regular Google searches? Instead, we have to dig deep into AI directories, pore over newsletters, and click through endless links. It's a glaring indication that despite the leaps and bounds in search technology, there's still a blind spot that needs addressing. We hope to see a future where search engines can deliver a more holistic, inclusive, and accurate representation of the web's vast resources.
A Closer Look at AI Apps Classification - Delving into the Details
In the vast world of AI applications, it's not uncommon to find ourselves a tad overwhelmed. Heck, we'd be kidding ourselves if we said it was all straightforward! But the good news is, we can break it down into two broad categories to make it a little easier to digest.
Diving Deeper into the Twin Categories of AI Apps
Now, let's roll up our sleeves and dive right into it. On one side of the spectrum, we've got these nifty little apps that let you chat with a book. Yeah, you heard that right! Imagine having a deep, meaningful conversation with Moby Dick, or maybe, a light-hearted banter with The Cat in the Hat. Pretty cool, eh?
On the other hand, we have a category of apps that work tirelessly behind the scenes, using those complex AI algorithms to suggest books you might like. Ever had an app suggest a book that suits your taste so perfectly it's almost scary? Well, you've got AI to thank for that.
The Inherent Assumptions and Issues with Book Chat Apps
However, a significant issue arises with many of the apps that allow you to chat with your book. The most powerful and capable apps are not specifically limited to books; rather, they are general all-purpose tools that facilitate conversations with your files.
While these all-purpose apps can indeed facilitate conversations with your books, they can sometimes feel a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. You're not trying to chat with all your files, just your favorite reads. Despite their comprehensive features, these apps often lack the tailored approach that a dedicated book discussion app could offer. Imagine an app that not only allows you to interact with your book but also understands the nuances of the storyline or the complexities of the characters. Such an application could significantly enhance the reading experience, making the conversation with your book more insightful and enjoyable.
This assumption rests on a couple of factors. Firstly, it assumes that you have access to your chosen book and that you have already identified and selected the book you wish to chat with. Secondly, it assumes that there are no digital rights management (DRM) restrictions on the book. If these conditions are met, you can simply upload the file and engage in a chat.
Exploring Additional Features Needed in Book Chat Apps
But it doesn't end there. Once you start chatting, you would want to organize all the conversations you have with various books into groups, bookshelves, or collections. Additionally, you may desire additional features, such as sharing a chat with others, speaking instead of typing, or having the application read the text aloud rather than displaying it visually.
Imagine having the ability to scan your physical books and add them directly to your digital shelves. This would allow you to keep track of both your physical and digital libraries in one place. Furthermore, wouldn't it be wonderful if the app could suggest book clubs or reading groups based on your reading preferences and the books in your library? This feature could facilitate meaningful discussions and further immerse you into the world of your favorite books. Lastly, how about a feature allowing you to virtually lend your books to friends or family, promoting the age-old tradition of sharing books in a modern, digital way? The possibilities are endless when you consider the additional features that could enhance book chat applications.
Differentiating Between General and Book-Specific Chat Features
When we discuss chatting with a book, we encounter both general chat features and book-specific chat features.
General chat features are ubiquitous across most platforms. They include functionalities such as the ability to send and receive text messages, use emojis, share images or videos, and participate in group chats.
On the other hand, book-specific chat features are designed with the unique needs of book lovers in mind. These might include the ability to share quotes directly from a book, start discussions about specific chapters, or even connect with the authors. This way, the dialogue is not just a conversation, it becomes a deeper engagement with the content of the book. The intersection of technology and literature thus creates a unique space for readers to interact, reflect and learn.
The Importance of Content Utilization in Book Chat Apps
In this context, we will completely exclude apps that do not utilize the content of the book because they do not provide a genuine chat experience with a book. This observation becomes evident when conducting a Google search for "chat with books AI." None of these apps appear on the first page of search results. Instead, the search yields apps or links to apps that do not enable you to chat with the book itself, as mentioned above. These apps merely engage in conversations based on public information, without allowing you to upload the book or access its content.
A truly enriching book chat app should provide a platform for users to interact deeply with the content of the book. This goes beyond just having a superficial chat about the book's characters or the author's biography. The app should be able to analyze the text, understand the context, and generate intelligent conversations based on the content. It should also allow users to ask specific questions about the book, get detailed answers, and engage in thought-provoking discussions. Such level of interaction would truly revolutionize how we consume and interact with books, making reading a more social and interactive experience.

As an avid reader, I'm always on the lookout for new ways to discuss books and find recommendations. When I first heard about AI assistants that you can chat with, I was intrigued but skeptical about how natural and engaging the conversations could be. However, after trying it out myself, I was pleasantly surprised.
I decided to test out Anthropic's Claude AI assistant. After initializing a conversation by saying "Hello, I'd like to chat about books," Claude responded politely and was ready to chat. I started by asking for a recommendation for my next fiction read. Claude provided a brief summary of Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens without any prompting. It sounded intriguing so I decided to check it out.
From there, our discussion flowed smoothly. I was able to ask follow up questions about the recommended book and get more details on the plot and characters. I also inquired about Claude's personal favorite novels and was given a list along with short reviews. It was interesting to see that while Claude is an AI, it has similarities to a person in terms of having preferences in different genres of fiction.
When I ran out of questions myself, Claude politely inquired about what types of stories I tend to enjoy most. Based on my response, it provided two additional book recommendations tailored specifically to my tastes. I appreciated that it paid close attention to our conversation to be able to suggest books personalized for me.
Overall, I was blown away by how natural the back-and-forth dialogue with Claude felt. It responded quickly and knew how to continue the discussion in a way that avoided obvious robotic responses. The recommendations were well thought out too. Now I have a few new book options to look forward to diving into. I'll definitely be chatting with Claude again soon for more reading suggestions and literary discussions. If you enjoy finding new books to read, I recommend giving an AI assistant like Claude a try for an engaging book chat.
